Coverage note first: Ellis County is the thinnest part of this directory. There is no dedicated city page here for Waxahachie, Ennis or Midlothian, the county's largest communities (Texas State Historical Association). The only overlap with the site's city coverage is a fragment of Mansfield, whose city limits "span three counties… located primarily in southeastern Tarrant County with parts in northeastern Johnson County and northwestern Ellis County" (TSHA, Mansfield). That is a sliver, not real coverage.

The geology, which is worth knowing anyway

Ellis County lies in the Blackland Prairie, and its defining feature is a hard ridge: "the Austin escarpment, a high chalk ridge, extends in a northeast-southwest direction through the county" (Soil Survey of Ellis County). Ground either side of it behaves differently. West of the chalk escarpment sits the Ellis-Houston-Houston Black association, about 12 percent of the county, whose soils overlie shale of the Eagle Ford formation. Along the escarpment itself, in the Ellis-Houston-Eddy association, the shallow clays over stiff olive-yellow clay or shale are "crusty soils" that "crack severely during the hot summer months." The Eddy-Stephen whiterock association covers about 18 percent in the west-central county, and the largest unit, Houston Black-Houston, about 17 percent. The Wilson-Crockett association of grayer, loamier soils surrounds Ennis (same survey).

On volume change the survey notes that soils classified CH and A-7 have high shrink-swell potential, "although the A-C horizon of Houston Black clay and other soil material is rated very high" (same survey).

County population fell to 43,395 by 1960 and then grew with Dallas commuting and Interstate 35E development, reaching 85,167 in 1990 and 159,317 by 2014 (Texas State Historical Association).
